GC controller doesn't work?

I plugged my GC controller into the player 1 port in the wii but when I start up my Wii and it says to press A at the beginning, pressing A on the GC controller doesn't work.GC controller doesn't work?
it doesnt work on the main menu,, play a vc or gc or a wii game that supports it like ssbb itll work in gameGC controller doesn't work?
Found out my batteries are dead after getting SSBB so I havent been able to play it since when I start up my Wii it goes straight to the menu and I only have my GC controller, is there a way to start it up to go straight to the game, or must this be changed in the menu too?

Or invest a couple more on some rechargables, eh?
